Illness: If your child stays home, please call the school office to inform them. The number is 891-3285. Student homework can be picked up after-school in the office if you call and request homework.
Tardies: School begins at 8:30 a.m. A student is tardy after 8:30 a.m. if they are not in class when roll is taken. If student is tardy, they must get a note from the office before coming to class.
Vacations during School: Please notify me at least 1 week in advance to arrange for assignments to be given to your child while they are away from school.
Allergies and Medicine
We have nut allergies in our classroom. Please do not send nuts or nut products into our class with your child.
If your child has any allergies please notify the school nurse.
If your child needs to take any medicines during the day, please speak with the school nurse immediately.
Backpacks
Every student needs to have a backpack in school everyday. Names should be clearly labeled and easy to find. Please make sure your child's backpack is emptied everyday. Notes and forms are often sent home which need to be read in a timely manner. Students are encouraged to pack their own backpack in the evening before bedtime with their Homework Folder and place them by the door ready to take to school in the morning.
Birthdays
Due to the increase of childhood obesity and diabetes, Chico Unified School District School Board has enacted Policy # 5030 which states that parents and teachers are encouraged to decrease the amount of sweets/treats in classrooms. We are therefore asking parents not to send in cupcakes, cakes, or sweets, etc., to celebrate birthdays. A more unique way to honor your child's birthday might be to donate non-edible items such as pencils, bookmarks, or a book dedicated to your child.
Also, please do not send birthday party invitations to school to pass out unless the whole class is invited. This will avoid hurt feelings from those not invited. Thank you for your support and understanding.
Book Orders
About every two months I will send home book orders. They are usually due within a week. The book orders are a nice addition to home libraries and are great for independent reading for required Homework. Students are required to read 20 minutes at home each day.
Some things that you can look for while choosing books:
The Newbery Award is given to the best children's book published the previous year. Newbery Honor books are runners-up.
The Caldecott Medal is awarded to the children's book with the best illustrations. Caldecott Honor books are runners-up.
You can order books online and pay by credit card.
If you prefer to send the order in to me, please make sure you write your child's name on the order form and write check made out to Scholastic or send me cash (the exact amount).
If you would like to purchase a book as a gift for your child, let me know and I will get it to you "secretly".
Change in Routine
Please write me a note or send me an e-mail if your child will be deviating from their normal routine, such as being picked up early or riding home with a friend or other family member. For safety reasons it is very important that I know where the children are headed after school.
Do not rely on voice mail to leave messages as I often do not check it until the end of the day after the students have left the classroom.
Communication
Newsletters: To keep you informed of what is going on in our class and with your child's progress, I will be sending home a classroom newsletter every other Thursday. I ask parents to review the Progress Report with their child, sign, and return signed portion.
Notes: You may send me a note via email or send me a note with your child.
Voice mail: Our classroom phones are turned off to outside calls during the school day. Any calls made during this time or when I am not available to answer the phone will go to voice mail. Please do not leave an " urgent" message that I must receive before the end of the school day. Those calls should go to the LCC Office. My phone number is 891-3285 ext. 111.
Dress Code
Please refer to the Behavior and Dress Standards pamphlet in your first day packet. A few reminders for girls- spaghetti straps must be at least on inch or wear t-shirts underneath. Sandals must be worn with socks (to protect from bees during P.E. and recess) and have a strap on the back. Boys are not allowed to wear hats in the class. Sagging, low riding pants and shorts are not allowed. Any questionable clothing issues will be sent to the office.
Field Trips
We go on many educational and fun field trips in third grade. Many of our field trips require parent chaperones and some require parent drivers. If you are interested in volunteering to chaperone or drive, please fill out the necessary paperwork that you can obtain from me or the LCC office.
Homework
Sign Planners everyday.
Additional homework may result from work not being finished in class.
Here are some Homework Tips for Parents:
Help set up a consistent organized place for reading homework.
Establish a consistent schedule.
If your child is practicing a skill, ask them to tell you which steps are easy, which are difficult, and how they are going to improve.
Library
Our class Library day is on Friday mornings. Favorite or unfinished books can be renewed. But if a child forgets their books they cannot check out another until they return their book.
Parents
Please check into the office if you are visiting our classroom.
Please write your child's name on lunch boxes, coats, hats, etc..
Make sure your child dresses appropriately to school each day. They must wear sneakers or bring them to school since I teach PE everyday. Always check your child's Homework Folder for Teacher/Parent communication and notices from the school.
School Materials
See Supply List tab under HOME.
Snacks
Our morning snack recess is at 10:10. Please encourage/provide your child with a healthy snack such as fruit, yogurt, cheese, etc.
No soda or candy.
Super Hero of the Week
Each week one student will be "Super Hero of the Week" so that we can know him/her better. The "Super Hero" will take home a list of activities in a "Super Hero Bag" which will give details about each day that they are the star student. These activities are written in detail under the Super Hero of the Week tab above.
Toys
Toys from home are not allowed in the classroom. Toys that are used by the students during class will be confiscated. This includes items that are not necessarily toys (cards, cell phones, i-pods, etc.) but, that distract the student's attention or other students' work.
Volunteers
I would like to encourage you to become an active participant in your child's education. Parent participation in and out of the classroom is welcomed. If you would like to help, please let me know. If you want to work in the classroom, help with the garden, or drive on field trips, be sure to fill out all of the necessary parent volunteer forms that will be available at Back to School Night or in the school office. It's great when parents are involved, and studies show it makes a positive difference in your child's attitude and progress in school.
